Stupidity

One of my daily observations has been that some people are just plain stupid. There is no nicer way to put this. While all of us do stupid things throughout our life some people take stupidity to a higher level on a daily basis. Take what happened yesterday for an example. “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn died in a high-speed car crash. Now while I am very sorry he died I really feel no sympathy for him. I know this sounds harsh but look what he did. I do however feel sorry for his family and friends and also for the other person who died in the car with him. Earlier yesterday morning, around 2am Dunn was driving his Porsche down route 322 outside of Philadelphia. He was reportedly drunk and driving at speeds of 110 mph. Dunn lost control of his car, crashed through a guard rail and then slammed into a tree which resulted in his car bursting into flames. There is so much stupidity here it’s unfathomable. First and one of the most common ones is drunk driving. I’m sorry but you’re telling me you just had to drive drunk and you couldn’t find any other way to get home. Second, not only are you drunk but driving at a ridiculously high rate of speed. Where is the common sense in this? Again, while I am sorry Dunn is dead it is a result of his recklessness and his own fault.

I will take this one step further and even consider referring to Dunn as a murderer because the safety of the passenger in his car was ultimately his responsibility. Now bear with me for a second. The legal definition of murder is (1) intentional murder; (2) a killing that resulted from the intent to do serious bodily injury; (3) a killing that resulted from a depraved heart or extreme recklessness; and (4) murder committed by an accomplice during the commission of, attempt of, or flight from certain felonies. The one that can be applied to Dunn would be number 3, a killing that resulted from extreme recklessness. While most of us think of murder as intent to kill the law sees you as a murderer if you kill someone as a result of your recklessness or gross negligence. Hence, Dunn can be looked at as a murderer because his passenger died as a direct result of his carelessness. I realize some people will disagree with me on this, but I am just pointing out the legal definition of murder. Look it up yourself if you like.

I do feel sorry Dunn died. I’m not saying that I don’t. I also don’t think he deserved to die or anything like that but what do you honestly expect when you drive like that. He took a chance, a big chance and in the end it turned out bad for him. Do you think he even considered the other passenger, his family or his friends? I highly doubt it. Someone asked me today if it had been my family member who died would I feel the same way. Let’s say this was my brother who died. Yes, of course I would be very upset but at the same time I would say you know what, he did this to himself. It’s not like it was an accident. Do I think he set out to die that night, no I don’t. But when you act in such a reckless manner you have to deal with the consequences, and unfortunately death was the consequence he and his passenger had to pay. Now not only does his family and friends have to deal with his death, but the family and friends of his passenger have to deal with their loss. All of this could have been prevented with a little common sense. All this boils down to one thing. Lack of common sense. As I said in my first post most people now-a-days lack common sense. If people would just take a second to think about what they are doing, things like this could be prevented. I would like to think maybe someone will learn from Dunn’s mistakes but I think with the amount of stupidity in this world today that would be wishful thinking.
